About the area

Borovets

Borovets ski resort is just 17km from Dolna Banya.  It was Bulgaria's first ever ski resort and still remains one of its most popular.  It is perfectly situated at the foot of Mount Musala- the highest peak in the Balkans.  There are 24 ski runs offering great slopes for beginners right through to experts.  There are good runs for both skiers and snowboarders.  The resort is lively in the evenings with a good selection of bars and restaurants to choose from and enjoy a few cold beers a pre-ski.

Kostenets

Kostenets is 10km from Dolna Banya and attracts visitors from far and wide due to its abundance of rich mineral springs.  It is home to the famous Momin Prohod Spa Resort which is thought to have healing and restorative properties.  There is also an Olympic sized pool just outside the town centre which is filled with this warm mineral water and is well worth a visit.  There is a larger supermarket in kostenets which is better for grocery shopping and there is also a few good restaurants to choose from.

Sofia

Bulgaria’s capital city is a rich mix of history, culture and all the luxuries of any cosmopolitan city.  Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is filled with historical buildings and monuments.  There is stunning architecture at every turn but the most famous and the most photographed building is the St. Alexander Nevski Memorial Church.  This is a beautiful example of neo-Byzantine architecture and the inside of the church is even more breathtaking with its vast domes covered in delicate murals- a must see.  The Banya Bashi Mosque is the only remaining mosque in the city when there were once over 70.  The most was designed and built in 1576 and is a fine example of Ottoman architecture.  You can still see the original Turkish baths outside the mosque that were only discovered in 2004.  The new Turkish baths are located just across from the mosque and attract many visitors every year who want to spend the day relaxing in the warm, therapeutic waters.

In between all the history and culture in Sofia you will find trendy boutiques and world-class restaurants.  There are countless bars and nightclubs which stay open until the early hours attracting the young and beautiful crowds.  Sofia really does offer something for everyone.
