Region Description

Famagusta District

The Famagusta District spans both Northern and Southern Cyprus.  The northern half being Turkish-Cypriot and the southern half Greek-Cypriot.  The Southern Famagusta District reputedly has the best beaches in Cyprus and some of the most stunningly beautiful coastlines.  Larger towns within this district include Paralimni, Ayia Napa, Kapparis, and Protaras.

Paralimni

Paralimni is the largest town in the local area.  It is just 10km away from Protaras yet it is much quieter and less affected by tourism.  After the Turkish invasion in 1974 Paralimni was transformed from a relatively insignificant town into the administrative headquarters for the Greek controlled area of Famagusta.  The town has developed lots since then but still retains its traditional feel.  There is an attractive town square and pretty gardens in the centre of town.  There are also enough shops, restuarants and bars to keep you entertained.  If you want to sample traditional Cypriot cuisine then take a trip away from the hustle and bustle of Protaris or Ayia Napa and have a meal in any of the tavernas in Paralimni; you won't regret it.

Protaras

Until the 1980s Protaras was just another pretty seaside town but as Ayia Napa (located just 5 miles away) began to attract the clubbers in the late 80s Protaras became known as the more sophisticated alternative to its neighbouring town and since then its reputation has gone from strength to strength.

Protaras is best known for its 5km of wonderful sandy beaches which keep holidaymakers coming back year after year.  'Fig Tree Bay' is the main beach and you'll find a wide range of watersports on offer here.  If you want something slightly more chilled out there are several smaller beaches along the coast which are great for calmer pursuits like snorkelling or simply sunbathing!

If you fancy seeing moe of the surrounding area you can take boat trips from Protaras to Cape Greko- a beautiful nature reserve on the most south-eastern point of the Island.  There is an abundance of wildlife here and beautiful clear waters ideal for snorkelling.  Another popular destination for day-trippers in Varosha- a town in the Turkish part of the Island that was evacuated when the Turks invaded in 1974.  The town has been sealed off ever since and is now known as the 'ghost town' as buildings are still furnished as they were left and appear to be frozen in time.  Eerie but very interesting!

Protaras has a lively nightlife with numerous pubs, bars and restaurants lining the main street.  The resort caters for tourists and whatever cuisine you want you will find it here, from Pizza Hut to French cuisine.  Protaras doesn't have many clubs but bars stay open late and if you want to dance until dawn Ayia Napa is only a short taxi ride away.
