About the area
Corfu Town is often considered to be one of the most interesting and beautiful towns in Greece. The town has a unique architecture influenced by the Venetians, the French and the British. Wandering around Corfu Town you will spot elegant French-styled flowered squares, beautiful mansion, superb palaces and fortresses, giving the capital a unique charm.
Corfu Town is split into Old and New Towns. The Old Town is made up of the Liston and the Esplanade. The Liston was once the promenade used by nobility but it’s now the best place to sit and drink a coffee in the sunshine outside one of its many cafes, or pick up souvenirs in one of the quirky shops that line the streets. The Esplanade is Europe’s largest square, it has the beach at one end and a bandstand at the other!
The New Town is home to cosmopolitan boutiques, top restaurants, colourful markets and lively bars and cafes. For those of you wanting to soak up some history take a visit to Spiridon’s Church, home to the mummified body of Corfu’s patron saint. An impressive 16th century fortress watches over the town and there are archaeology museums where you can read up on the history of this beautiful Old Town.
Corfu Town has something for everyone. Whether you want to shop til you drop, enjoy delicious food, watch the yachts arriving in the old port or simply take in the beauty of the wonderful architecture that makes this place so unforgettable, you’ll be glad you visited Corfu Town. For those of you with energy left after all this there are plenty of bars and clubs for you dance the night away in at the commercial centre just out of town.
