Elounda is an excellent location for exploring the historic island of Crete with its stunning landscape and clear turquoise sea. Elounda village is positioned about 8km north of Agios Nikolaos, north of Elounda you will find Plaka seaside village which boasts picturesque views across the sea towards the historic Spinalonga Island.

Elounda has several small beaches and proves to be extremely popular with holidaymakers who do not want a hectic or secluded destination. Elounda is not too quiet and also not too busy, and so provides a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from. Transport on the island is very good, there are plenty of regular buses at Elounda, so getting around the island is efficient and cheap.

Elounda harbour may be small but its perfectly formed, offering breathtaking panoramic views and sunsets with many bars, restaurants and cafes allowing you to take some time out to watch the world go by. The picturesque Elounda harbour still retains its heritage as it was once a typical fishing village whereby local farming and fishing were the main source of income.

The island of Spinalonga attracts many visitors mostly to see the former ruins of the Venetian fort and leper colony, known as 'Lepar Island'. A short trip to the island is well worth a few euros. The sunken city of Olous is a slightly less well known attraction but for free you can snorkel around the ruins of this lost city.

Overall, Elounda is a small Cretan town that has developed into a place famous for its beautiful scenery and relaxing way of life. A great place to explore without the masses.
