About the area

Kalathas is really just a small settlement, known best for its beautiful sandy beach lined with palm trees.  The beach is lined with a small number of good tavernas where you can enjoy beautiful fresh seafood or local specialities.  The beach is popular with tourists and locals and there are a good range of watersports on offer like windsurfing, waterskiing, canoeing and scuba diving, as well as activities like beach volleyball.  The village itself only has a few small shops but it is worth a visit to see the great monasteries and churches of the Akrotiri Peninsula, 'The Holy Mountain of Crete.' 

The town of Kounoupidiana is only 5km away from Kalathas and you will find a good selection of larger shops there.  There are banks with ATM machines, a pharmacy and larger supermarkets for grocery shopping.  There is also a wide selection of restaurants here for you to choose from in the evenings.
