About the area
The picturesque seaside village of Mochlos lies on the north coast of Crete, 33 km east of Agios Nikolaos and the same distance west of Sitia.
The inhabitants have been farmers and fishermen since antiquity, while the tourism industry is a more recent occupation. The village has very good tavernas, mini markets, cafes, bars, car hire companies, etc. The islet of Mochlos, just 200 metres offshore, is an important archaeological site, with the remains of one of the greatest harbours and naval centres of Minoan Crete. Fabulous treasures have been brought to light there since excavations began at the turn of the last century.
Mochlos village has a small beach with fine pebbles, a little further west has a slight longer beach, both very quiet and laid back with a few restaurants and cafes nearby to sample the catch of the day and the captivating views. The beautiful crystal clear waters makes snorkelling ideal. The more adventurous may swim across to the small island, only a few hundred metres from the beach to see the ruins of the Minoan settlement, make sure you take a pair of sandals as the rock can be sharp.
