If you're less of a water sports enthusiast you will still appreciate the soft white sands of Santa Maria beach where you can lay and read a good book or enjoy an ice cold beer. Santa Maria beach is widely regarded as the best white sand beach in Cape Verde and once you've seen it you'll know why.
Scuba diving is also popular around Santa Maria and you will have not problem finding qualified companies to arrange a dive or provide lessons for you whether you're an experienced diver or a beginner. Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty to catch in the Atlantic waters surrounding Sal. You can cast off from the beach or try deep-sea fishing which is regarded as excellent. You may even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin or a turtle swimming by.
Aside from the glorious white sandy beach Santa Maria has lots to offer. There is a good selection of places to eat in the town, from trendy surf cafes to top restaurants serving a variety of different cuisine. The seafood is incredible as it is freshly caught and cooked on the same day. There are bars and even a few nightclubs to keep you dancing to the early hours (and the Cape Verdian's like to dance!)
