Bang Por

Bang Por Beach is located on the northwest corner of Koh Samui, between Nathon and Maenam. The beach is four kilometers long and faces to the north with views of Koh Phangan.  The waters are calm in this area of Koh Samui and the beach is very clean. Palm trees line the edge.   Bang Por has attracted more attention recently as The Four Seasons, now owned by Bill Gates, has just opened a resort, the finest on the island, making the most of the ideal surroundings.

The views are very picturesque – that’s clear as soon as you arrive. The bay looks out over Koh Phangnan, Samui’s little sister, and is secluded by natural rock formations at either end. The sand is soft and white and the sea, churned by gentle winds, keeps the soft waves rolling to pleasantly audible effect. The warm waters are great for swimming, and there are shallow coral reefs which are great for snorkelling. The breeze also makes this one of the best locations for sailing all year round.

Bang Por is developing more of a community feel these days as an increasing numbers of international visitors choose to permanently set up home here. Mind Your Language, the island’s only teachers of Thai language, have recently set up a branch here. There are a number of emerging health centres for people who want to invest their time in intensive programs of detox and holistic healing, and the location is also home to one of Samui’s finest schools.

Bang Por is right by the sea and so provides an array of well served restaurants, providing fresh fish daily, cooked in a variety of styles. You’ll see the catches being brought in each day and the chefs choosing the prime choices for that day’s cooking. Guests can always ask for their fish to be cooked in a certain way, so don’t feel restricted by the menu. Bang Por Seafood is a well known local Thai restaurant, located on Bang Por beach. Bang Por Seafood with coconut terrace at beachfront offers local style cuisine, authentic Thai food and seafood varieties.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is an island located in the Gulf of Thailand surrounded by around 60 other islands (the most well known are neighbouring islands Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.)  It has been one of the most popular area in Thailand for tourists since the late 1970s and its easy to see why.  Koh Samui has some of the best beaches in Thailand from Chaweng beach on the North East coast- 7km of white sands which is bustling in peak season to Maenam beach where the sands are less densely populated but just as stunning.

Chaweng is the busiest resort on the island and a favourite with backpackers.  You will find 5* resorts sitting alongside budget beach bungalows here and there are no end of bars and restaurants to choose from.  Just down the road from Chaweng you'll find Lamai with its famous Thai boxing stadium.  Lamai is still busy but has a more laid back feel to Chaweng.

Away from the bars and beaches Koh Samui offers visitors lots more to see and do.  There are some beautiful waterfalls you can visit inland, particularly Na Muang Waterfall and Hin Lad Waterfall, both situated a short distance from the harbour town of Nathon.

The Big Buddha is a 12 metre high Buddha statue which was built on a small island off Koh Samui but is connected to the island by a bridge.  This is a popular tourist attraction but also a very important Buddhist symbol for the local people.

Koh Samui is easy to explore, whether it be by bicycle, hire car or motorbike.  Prices are cheap to hire but the traffic can get a little hectic so be careful!
