Region Description

The Turquoise Coast / Lycia Region

The Aegean Coast tempts tourists to Turkey with its long, beautiful beaches and forest hills. Ancient port towns such as Foça, Kusadasi and Bodrum have re-invented themselves as modern-day resorts with well-developed tourist infrastructures. But its popularity is nothing new; all the way back in the 2nd Century, Greek travel writer Pausanias wrote a glowing review of the Aegean Coast, praising its pleasant weather climate and splendid architecture.

The northern end of the coast is more popular with the locals than for foreigners, as the farther south you go the better the climate gets. There's plenty to see and lots of sunshine, and it’s easy to get to with regular bus routes from Istanbul and Ankara, and even a ferry from Venice during the summertime.

Yalikavak

Yalikavak, described as the St Tropez of Turkey, lies at the north-west corner of the Bodrum Peninsula, 17 km or 10 miles from Bodrum and used to be a fishing and sponge divers village. The permanent inhabitants of Yalikavak number around 6,800 people.

This fertile coastal region is ideal for sailing and all water sports and attracts many foreign yachts to the harbour that once sheltered mainly fishing boats. Yalikavak is renown for superb sunsets and its unspoilt shoreline and sparkling clean sea is one of the few remaining abodes of the endangered Monachus Monachus Mediterranean seals and therefore a protected area. In 2002 Yalikavak Bay was awarded the "Blue Flag" for its clean waters.

Yalikavak really spoils you for choice on where to eat and drink whether it be along the promenade looking out across the sea or right in amongst the little fishing harbour. Shops are plentiful where you are able to pick up those essentials or take a little time to find that perfect holiday gift. Whatever you are after Yalikavak is sure to have it in abundance.

Bodrum

Modern Bodrum is one of the most international of Turkey's summer towns and is renowned for bars, restaurants, clubs, designer shops, a vibrant atmosphere and Bohemian lifestyle. Bodrum has aspects that appeal to a broad range of people with many interests. Whether you want to just sun bath, go deep sea diving, sail, shop till you drop or go clubbing every night there is something for everyone.

The one sight which is seen for miles around is the stunning Castle of St Peter. This sits in the middle of the town and dates from the 15th century, it is home to the excellent Museum of Underwater Archaeology - a must see.

Market, Shops, Bars and Restaurants

There is an unbelievable huge indoor market which is home to the largest array of fresh products I have ever seen! Fruits and vegetables straight from the farms, spices and leather goods fill the senses. If your feeling nostalgic whilst on holiday, opposite the Marina near the Yacht Club you will even find a Marks and Spencer store!

The town's main street is lined with bars, English-style pubs and sports bars so you could even indulge in a good old-fashioned pub crawl. There are good Latin American-themed bars too, if you fancy a bit of a salsa. You will be spoilt for choice. If you fancy getting stuck into some Turkish food, try vine leaves stuffed with vegetables, roast meat kebabs and tasty kofte, meatballs of minced lamb seasoned with spices, served with rice and salad. Turkish pizza (pideci) is very tasty.

Along the front of the Marina you will find the fishermen selling their vast array of freshly caught sea food at give away prices - haggle with them, it is expected! Gumbet district 'smudges' into Bodrum and is filled with bars, nightclubs, shops and restaurants many open until the early hours.

Bodrum Nightlife

Bodrum is one of the top destinations in Turkey for night-life. When you have finished promenading around the Marina or going from bar to bar, there is still plenty to do. For some people it is the freedom to stay up all night that makes their holiday, here that is a matter of fact.

Nearby Gumbet is a fantastic option for a good disco and the partying often continues until dawn. The club with undoubtedly the biggest and noisiest reputation is Halikarnas, perched on the edge of the bay. You need never visit the same club twice even if staying for 14 nights.

Gumusluk

Gumusluk is a real must see during your trip to Turkey, it is one of the oldest settlements on the Bodrum Peninsula and stands on the ancient site of the Carian city of Myndos. Gumusluk is a protected gem due to its archaeological value and so remains a real taste of traditional Turkey.

From exploring the idyllic Rabbit Island to watching the fishing boats enter the harbour from your favourite beachside café to wining and dining the night away in one of the excellent local restaurants Gumusluk is sure to have it all for that relaxing holiday experience.

Turgutreis

Turgutreis has something for everyone with its 19 kilometres of dark sandy beaches, calm shallow sea, stylish new marina and wonderful array of restaurants and bars where you can sample that freshly-caught fish or cool down with your favourite ice-cold drink.

Turgutreis is a lively resort which is epitomised by its renowned Saturday Markets and friendly locals. At night-time you can watch the sun set from a host of waterfront eateries and dance your way through the evening at any one of the lively night spots.
