History of Alhaurin el Grande

People have lived at Alhaurin el Grande for as long as history has been recorded. In fact, in the forested areas to the southeast, there have been traces of Neolithic occupation discovered. Beyond that, the area has been occupied and settled by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs before being conquered by Christian forces in the Reconquista. 

The Romans saw that area around Alhaurin el Grande was incredibly fertile and temperate and built many villas and buildings in the area. The hills around Alhaurin el Grande are still dotted with their ruins and remains. 

The Moors occupied the town and gave it its name, Alhaurin, which means Garden of Allah. The ‘el Grande’ refers to the linked township to a smaller town known as Alhaurin de la Torre. 

During the Peninsular War of 1808-1814, Alhaurin el Grande was occupied by French forces and suffered considerable bombardment. Alhaurin el Grande is a town full of a rich history that can be seen everywhere for you to explore.

  • The Moorish cork mill - a surprising gem in the town of Alhaurin el Grande. This still functioning mill has been there since 1400 and is powered by hydraulics and water that comes from the Fahala river. Take a guided tour and discover the history of this national monument. 

  • Plaza del Ayuntamiento - the main square outside the town hall. This plaza has three Roman columns that were discovered nearby. The plaza also has a stunning view of the valley and surrounding mountains. 

  • Arcos de Cobertizo - for a town with such a rich history, it’s unsurprising to find many historical sites. This 12th-century Moorish archway is one of them. It no longer leads anywhere but represents a tangible link to the town’s past. It stands close to the church. 

  • Alhaurin golf resort - Located in the mountains, this golf course has some spectacular views. This 18 hole golf course is friendly to all golfing standards and even has a children’s par-3 course adjacent to its new clubhouse. 

  • Museo del Aceite - a family run mil and olive oil museum. Take a tour and see how olive oil is made and how it used to be made. The tour includes tasters of a variety of oils with breakfast.

Alhaurin el Grande is well located in that it is far enough from the coast that it is a quieter and rustic spot for your holiday, but is still close enough to the glorious beaches of Fuengirola and Benalmadena for you to easily enjoy.

  2. Playa de Torreblanca - this beach has won both a blue flag award and a Q award for quality in tourism in 2016. This beach is a must visit if you want to enjoy the sun in a relaxed atmosphere. Despite being quieter than the central beaches, it still has all of the beach bars and restaurants that you would expect. 

  3. Malapesquera Beach - this beach is well known for its boat hire and water sports facilities on offer. Located next to the Benalmadena Marina, this sandy beach hosts the Festival of the Virgen del Carmen each year in mid-July.

  4. Santa Ana Beach - this family-friendly beach offers many facilities for sunbathers, including beach beds, sunshades, showers and public toilets. There are also many beach bars, restaurants and shops nearby for you to enjoy. 

  5. Los Boliches - found in the centre of Fuengirola, right on the promenade. Los Boliches beach was awarded a blue flag award for its facilities, that include plenty of leisure or sports activities. Enjoy the stretch of 1,100 metres of gorgeous sands that this beach boasts. 

Alhaurin el Grande Weather

Alhaurin el Grande enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate with lovely hot summers. Due to its separation from the sea by the mountains, temperatures can soar in the summer months, ranging around 32ºC. 

The winter months aren't as hot as the summer months, however, the temperature is still warm and it is often sunny. 

Alhaurin el Grande and the Costa del Sol are very much a year-round holiday destination.

Alhaurin el Grande is close to Malaga airport and is easily reached by taxi or hire car. There is also an airport transfer option, which we recommend as the easiest way to reach your holiday villa in Alhaurin el Grande.
