Introduction to Alicante

Alicante is centrally located on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, in the region of Valencia. Alicante has been an important port city for many years and the sea air can always be smelt throughout Alicante.

Explore the city's culture, history and tourism as you walk along its marble tessellated streets, explore its breathtaking beaches and visit its historical monuments.

Our wide range of Alicante holiday villas is the perfect place to discover this jewel of the Costa Blanca.

History of Alicante

The area around Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years by a wide range of cultures, from neolithic hunter-gatherers to classical cultures such as the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans to the Visigoths and Moors during the middle ages and the Arab conquests of Iberia. Alicante was captured by Christian forces in the 13 century during the Reconquista, which is where the Santa Barbara Castle was given its name by King Alfonso X of Aragon.

Alicante continued to grow into an important port city leading to the 20th century. Alicante suffered during the 1920s during the Rif War and sided with Republican forces during the Spanish Civil War. Alicante was the last city to fall to Franco’s troops in 1939 and the Republican government fled Spain from its port. Alicante suffered heavy bombing during the civil war, especially from the Italian Aviazione Legionaria volunteer forces.

Alicante re-invented its identity following the industrial decline in the ‘70s and ‘80s and has grown into one of Spain’s main tourist destinations.

Things to do in Alicante

Alicante is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Spain and as such has tourist attractions to suit the needs of every type of tourist.

The beaches of the Costa Blanca are some of the nicest in Spain and the weather almost guarantees beautiful beach weather all year round. The city boasts a wide range of restaurants and eateries of all styles, letting you experience both local Valencian and international food of high quality during your stay.

If you want to get out of the bustling city then head to the amazing Aitana Safari Park or the beautiful Tabarca Island and explore the different worlds whilst relaxing and enjoy the stunning weather.

There is so much to see and do in Alicante we have made a list of our top 5 things to see and do during your stay in Alicante to help you make a start to planning your villa holiday itinerary:

  • Santa Barbara Castle - Alicante’s most prominent landmark that can be seen from across the city. Santa Barbara Castle offers fantastic views overlooking the city and out to sea. The castle was built in the 10th century by the Moors and is one of Spain’s largest medieval fortresses. Admission is free, letting you explore the dungeons and ramparts in your own time.

  • Tabarca Island - is a small island 10 miles off the coast of Alicante. You can reach the island with a charming ferry ride that runs often daily. The island is the perfect destination for a day trip, with a few hotels and restaurants for food and drinks, a lovely beach to relax in the sun and plenty of opportunities to try cove jumping, scuba diving and snorkelling.

  • Aitana Safari Park - This fantastic safari park is about a 30-minute drive from Alicante and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The safari park is divided into two main areas, the main park and the children’s zoo. The main park boasts animals such as lions, tigers, elephants, zebras and giraffes. The children’s area has an animal nursery for the newly born members of the park.

  • Alicante Nightlife - Alicante provides a vibrant and fun nightlife scene all year round. There are many bars, clubs and discos open until the small hours of the morning with plenty of places to enjoy a drink or two across town. The old city centre, known as El Barrio, has some of the finest restaurants and tapas bars in the city.

  • Las Hogueras de San Juan - A local festival that is held on the 24th of June. The festival is a traditional celebration where locals make wooden statues which are then paraded through town before being put on a bonfire at the end of the celebration. The festival includes dancing, music and plenty of traditional local food. The closing ceremony includes a huge fireworks display over Saint Barbara Castle.

Alicante Travel Information

Alicante boasts its own airport which operates flights to and from most European countries with low-cost airlines. Alicante is Spain's sixth busiest airport. Alicante also has strong rail links to Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

Both Hire cars and taxis are available in Alicante but we recommend an airport transfer as the easiest and most cost-effective way to reach your holiday villa.

Once you have arrived in Alicante you will find it easy to walk around the town to reach both the beach and the local amenities. If you are interested in any of the attractions in the surrounding area you will easily be able to find a taxi, although this can get expensive when travelling further afield.
