A History of Benalmadena

Similar to the rest of the Costa del Sol, Benalmadena has a long history and has been occupied by many different cultures since the bronze age including Phoenicians, Romans and the Moors. During the 15th century, the area became a crucial part of defence from seaborne raids, and was once known as Vigia de la Costa, which translates to "look out for the coast". As a result, three prominent lookout towers were built, and the remains can still be seen to this day. Torre Bermeja is situated in Benalmadena Costa, close to the Selwo Marina, and the other two can be discovered at Torrequebrada and Torremuelle.

During the Spanish tourism boom of the '50s and '60s Benalmadena population rapidly increased as tourists started to flock to the Costa del Sol from all across Europe and the town hasn’t looked back since. The ’70s were an exciting time for development as locals watched on and experienced the opening of Tivoli World, the areas most popular theme park, along with the development of Benalmadena Pueblo as a tourist attraction, which was open to the public to enjoy in the early ’80s.
