Introduction to Calahonda

Calahonda village with its stunning coastline and beaches

The small seaside town of Calahonda can be found on Andalucía’s Costa del Sol, about halfway between the popular resorts of Marbella and Fuengirola. Calahonda is one of the largest property developments in Southern Spain and is incredibly popular with European tourists. Calahonda is technically part of La Cala de Mijas but is very much self-sustaining with a wide range of local amenities, restaurants and shops.

Rural flavours and a coastal lifestyle are two of the most attractive features of Calahonda. The town has a wide range of green areas, large plots and a strict limit on the number of apartment buildings.  This has helped Calahonda to remain fairly peaceful and rustic as it has grown.

Calahonda, and the Costa del Sol in general is well known for its excellent golf courses. In fact, there are 10 golf courses within 10 kilometres of Calahonda alone. There is also a wide array of water sports available due to the proximity of the coast. Those looking for a sporty vacation are well catered for in Calahonda with a variety of tennis courts, fitness centres and other sporting facilities available.

Calahonda is dedicated to catering to the needs of its visitors and inhabitants, with a wide range of restaurants and bars for you to enjoy. Enjoy a swim in the private pool of your villa before heading out to some of the many places to shop or have a bite to eat and head to the beach and relax in the famous Spanish sun.

History of Calahonda

The early history of Calahonda is similar to that of the rest of the Costa del Sol and has been occupied by different groups over the years leading up the Moors during the Islamic conquest of Iberia. Signs of the Moorish heritage of Calahonda can be found everywhere. If you wish to explore its past, be sure to check out the ancient watchtowers positioned along the coastline.

Calahonda actually started out as simply a residential area of neighbouring La Cala de Mijas as demand for holiday villas and apartments grew in the 1960s during the tourism boom in the Costa del Sol. However, it has since become recognised as a resort in its own right with three commercial centres, numerous restaurants and many local businesses based here.
