History of Calahonda

Signs of the Moorish heritage of Calahonda can be found everywhere. If you wish to explore its past, be sure to check out the ancient watchtowers positioned along the coastline. Calahonda actually started out as simply a residential area of neighbouring La Cala de Mijas as demand for holiday villas and apartments grew in the 1960s.

However, it has since become recognised as a resort in its own right with three commercial centres, numerous restaurants and many local businesses based here..

Points of Interest

The sandy beach at Calahonda is one of the main attractions for families looking to soak up the sun. However, there are plenty of activities on offer for those who wish to be more active on their holidays.

For sports enthusiasts, there are four excellent golf course as well as two diving centres within easy access of the beach. Snorkelling and diving are popular options, with facilities to hire the necessary equipment available here.

Calahonda is very close to the larger resort of Fuengirola and it sits in the municipality of Mijas.  Waterparks, theme parks, and shopping malls are all within easy reach of Calahonda.

For nightlife the cosmopolitan resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus are just a short drive down the coast.
