Holiday Villas in Casares, Costa del Sol

Casares is famed as one of the most beautiful villages in Andalucia. A traditional whitewashed Andalucian village on the Costa del Sol with narrow streets and a stunning view of the surrounding landscape. Casares is a popular destination for tourists on day trips, wanting to get a feel for the 'real Andalucia' but it's also a lovely place to stay for longer.

The main square of Casares, Plaza de Espana, has many cafes and tapas restaurants dotted around it and you can take in the spectacular views from here.  The town is 1400 feet above sea level and the views are truly breathtaking, you can even spy the coast of Africa on a clear day.

History buffs will enjoy looking around the beautiful church and the museum dedicated to Julius Caesar who is believed to have bathed in spring waters here to heal his skin conditions.

Information on Casares

Introduction to Casares

Casares is very much an ‘off the beaten track’ destination in the Costa del Sol and remains one of Andalucia’s best-kept secrets. Despite being distant from the busier resort destinations, Casares is only a 15-minute drive from the coast and has some fantastic beaches hidden in coves.

Casares is one of the more historical sights on the Costa del Sol and offers a wide range of museums and historical landmarks to explore, such as a Moorish castle and Roman baths.

Surrounding Casares is some of the most stunning countryside of the Costa del Sol and the views available are amazing. It really is difficult to convey how breathtakingly stunning the views of the village are from the old Moorish castle that overlooks Casares, especially with the many eagles and kestrels soaring overhead.

The village of Casares offers a wide range of local amenities, such as shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. Be sure to sample the two local dishes, ‘Casarena soup’ and the mountain rabbit.

History of Casares

Casares rose to prominence in history when, supposedly, Julius Caesar visited the area and ordered the building of the village after his long suffered skin condition was cured by the local sulphurous and alkaline waters. He also constructed a magnificent villa here which still remains as a historic monument.

The area was occupied by the Moors during the Islamic conquest of Iberia. In the 13th Century, a large Moorish castle was built in what became the present town centre. The village was captured by Christian forces in the Reconquista.

More recent history shows that the father of Andalusian nationalism and writer, Blas Infante, was born in Casares. Since 1978 the historic and cultural heritage of Casares has been officially protected.

Things to do in Casares

Casares is a rustic and beautiful village that is pleasant to stroll around. There are many historical and cultural sights to explore, such as Blas Infante’s birthplace, the Iglesia de San Sebastian or the old cemetery.

Casares also offers one of the best golf courses in Andalucia, if you are looking for a more active holiday. Also, there is many nature hikes and walks in the countryside surrounding Casares.

To help you plan your activities during your holiday we have included a few suggestions of our favourite things to do in Casares:

  • Fiestas in Casares - many fiestas take place in Casares and are fantastically traditional and fun. Each year several different festivals are celebrated, including one named after the patron saint, Virgen del Rosario in the first week of September. The whole town celebrates with wine, music and traditional folk dances.

  • Finca Cortesin - one of the best golf courses in Andalucia. This luxury golf resort has a challenging course that has hosted several tournaments. It also has a hotel, country club and a top-quality restaurant.

  • Casares Castillo - the remains of the Moorish castle. Take in the history of this site, as well as taking in the breathtaking view from it. Gaze out over the magnificent views and keep an eye out for the many eagles that often fly nearby.

  • Baths de la Hedioda - supposedly the bath built by Julius Caesar after his skin condition was cured by the waters here. Visit and discover the vast history of this site that includes a Roman aqueduct which was used to drive a water wheel of a large mill.

  • Countryside walks and hikes - there are many, well sign-posted, walks just outside Casares that takes you to the top of the adjacent hills. The hike is well worth it for the breathtaking views of the whitewashed village. You can also walk down to the river valley at Manilva.

The Top 5 Beaches in Casares

The nearest beaches to Casares are those at Casares bay, which is less than a 25-minute drive away. The beaches are of a very high standard. Many of them have been awarded blue flag awards for the quality of their facilities and high levels of cleanliness.

To help you decide on which ones to visit, we have included our top 5 most interesting beaches to visit in Casares:

  • Playa Ancha - found next to Marina del Casares. This beach caters well to tourists, with ample parking, showers, toilets and lifeguard points. Nearby is the watchtower, known as Torre de la Sal. The rocks here offer plenty of snorkelling opportunities.

  • Playa de la Sal - this small beach is in a small cove to the west of the old watchtower. To reach this beach you can either walk along the rocks at low tide or descend from the seafront promenade path from the watchtower. The promenade has a wide range of beach bars and shops to explore.

  • Playa Piedra Paloma - The authorised dog beach in the area. There are several beach bars to relax at after enjoying a pleasant stroll on this lovely beach. Also the location of the Islote de las Palomas, or the little island of the doves.

  • Playa Chica - this beach is part of the larger Playa Ancha. It is nicely sheltered from the wind and is a nice place to relax and take in the beautiful sea views. The dark sand and surrounding vegetation make this an interesting change from traditional beaches.

  • Punta de la Chullera - a hidden gem of the Costa del Sol. This small cove is hidden by cliffs and rocks on each side but is an ideal getaway in the summer. There is a local bar that operates in the cove, making it a fairly popular tourist destination. There are two historic watchtowers that watch over the beach.

Casares Weather

Casares enjoys a climate that is similar to the rest of the Costa del Sol. The sub-tropical Mediterranean climate provides hot summers and glorious sunshine. Thankfully, the cooling breeze from the sea makes the summer heat more manageable. Temperatures average around 32 ºC during the summer months.

The off periods of the year are still warm but don’t have the intense heat of the summer. The sea continues to cool, making the temperature very enjoyable all year round.

Casares Travel Information

Casares is an hour drive from Malaga airport. The Costa del Sol is very accommodating to tourists, and there are many hire cars and taxis available.

We recommend taking an airport transfer to your holiday villa, as it is far more cost-effective than a taxi and much easier than a hire car.

Unfortunately, there is only a single, twice a day bus that runs to Casares from Marbella. Everything you will need in the town itself is easily within walking distance, however, if you fancy a trip to the beach or attraction slightly further away then you will need to go by taxi or hire car.
