Introduction to Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a purpose-built holiday resort on the east coast of Lanzarote, near the island’s capital of Arrecife. It is Lanzarote’s third-largest tourist resort.

Costa Teguise boasts some amazing beaches for you to enjoy during your visit, many of which are popular with windsurfers and have facilities for teaching and renting equipment if you fancy having a try. The beaches are also popular with swimmers looking to enjoy the clear Atlantic waters and sunbathers looking to work on their tan.

Costa Teguise is the perfect place to base your exploration of the Northern attractions of the Island, such as the Cactus Garden or the Volcanic Lava Tube. Additionally, the two largest cities on the island are only a short drive away and boast a range of historic and cultural attractions for you to visit.

Finally, Costa Teguise boasts the only water park, aquarium and the oldest golf course on the island, making it a prime tourist destination and the perfect place for a villa holiday.

History of Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a purpose-built holiday resort that was developed in the ‘70s in response to the growing tourism industry in Spain. It was developed as an upmarket alternative to Puerto del Carmen and became very popular with European tourists in the ‘80s.

There is a range of slides, rides and pools for you and the kids to enjoy as well as restaurants, cafes and other facilities. There is also a bus service that will collect you from your resort to save you a taxi fare.

  • Costa Teguise Golf Course - this is the oldest golf course on Lanzarote and boasts an 18 hole golf course that is located in the foothills of an ancient volcano and features breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Jameos del Aqua & Cueva de Los Verdes – both of these attractions are part of a 6km long lava tube that formed around 4,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. Cueva de Los Verdes is a beautiful cave system that can be explored with a tour that shows all of the attractions of one of the longest volcanic galleries in the world. Jameos del Aqua is an unusual bar/restaurant that is found at the opening of this lava tube. These attractions can be combined to make an amazing day out full of discovery and natural beauty.

The Top 5 Beaches in Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise boasts some great beaches for tourists and locals to enjoy, most of which are connected to the seafront promenade that runs along the shoreline.

The main beaches provide all of the usual facilities that you would expect, whilst others are more natural and basic. The beaches of Costa Teguise are popular with swimmers and windsurfers due to the ideal conditions of the water and the wind.

Here are 5 of the many beaches in the area that are well worth a visit:

  1. Las Cucharas – the main beach of Costa Teguise. Playa Cuchara boasts fine, golden sand and is popular with both locals and tourists. There is an abundance of facilities at this beach, including sun loungers, toilets and beach bars. Las Cucharas is also a favourite with windsurfers and half of the beach is cordoned off to separate them from swimmers. This does mean Playa Cucharas can be windy.

  2. Bastian Beach - a more sheltered beach that can be reached from the seafront promenade. Bastion beach is surrounded by beautiful gardens which makes it an attractive place to relax in the sun. Bastion beach is sheltered by a number of stone zocos’ which protects sunbathers from the wind.

  3. Playa Jabillo - this small horseshoe-shaped beach is popular with swimmers and is encircled by volcanic rock, which creates the perfect pool. This beach can become crowded due to its popularity and small size, but does offer a range of facilities such as sun loungers and restaurants.

  4. Los Charcos - this is Costa Teguise’s most basic and exposed beach. There is a lack of facilities, asides from the car park, and it is exposed to the winds. However, on a sunny and still day this beach can make a great spot to sunbathe as it will be relatively quiet.

  5. Playa Ancia – a real local favourite that is off the beaten track. You can find this beach a short distance from the centre of Costa Teguise past the palace of Las Maretas. Playa Ancia is the perfect place for swimming due to large stone boulders that enclose the beach. There is a lack of facilities, however.

Costa Teguise Weather

Costa Teguise is further north than some of the other Lanzarote resorts and is much less sheltered, which can mean that during the winter months it can be cooler, cloudier and windier than some of the other resorts to the south of the island.

However, in the summer months, the temperature and sun are still as enjoyable as the rest of the island, although there Costa Teguise is still more exposed to the winds. During the summer this breeze can be rather welcoming as it prevents the temperature from getting unbearable. Additionally, the wind makes Costa Teguise the perfect location to try windsurfing and the sport is very popular in the area.
