El Coto is a charming urbanisation that is located between the beautiful resort town of Fuengirola and the traditional village of Mijas. It is also within walking distance of a range of other urbanisations, such as Las Sierrezuela and Campo Mijas, meaning there is a range of restaurants, bars and other local amenities within easy reach. 

Unlike other urbaniations in the Costa del Sol, El Coto has a strong village feel and boasts a village centre with a selection of restaurants and shops for you to make use of. There is a local bus route that runs into Fuengirola, making a beach trip a breeze. 

El Coto has an excellent choice of restaurants available that caters to a variety of tastes, including British, Traditional Spanish, Indian, Mexican and Italian. El Coto is an esteemed residential urbanisation situated at the heart of the Costa del Sol on Mijas Costa. Just 20 minutes’ drive from Malaga Airport and 5 minutes’ from popular Fuengirola, this lovely urbanisation has a great range of local amenities within walking distance of its many holiday villas and apartments.

El Coto has a handful of good places to eat.  From El Brujo that serves traditional Spanish and English dishes, to The Palace of India that serves delicious Indian cuisine to eat in or take out.  The locals in the area love the fantastic bakery in El Coto and there is a café right next door so you can enjoy a coffee and a croissant at your leisure. 

You can easily catch a bus into Fuengirola from the centre of El Coto and there is also a taxi rank so you can jump into a cab whener you like and visit the nearby towns of Mijas, Marbella and Benalmadena.

El Coto is an urbanisation that is close to the resort town of Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. El Coto is located in the region of Andalucia and enjoys the area’s rich history, beautiful beaches and fabulous culture. 

Being so close to the bustling town of Fuengirola and the traditional village of Mijas means that your stay in El Coto will never be short of things to do. Fuengirola boasts many beautiful beaches for you to enjoy and a variety of tourist attractions such as the Mijas water park.

History of El Coto

This area of the Costa del Sol has its origins in a variety of cultures, including Phoenicians, Romans and the Moors and has been settled multiple times over the years. 

El Coto came into existence to satisfy the overwhelming demand for beautiful and luxurious holiday destinations as the tourism boom of the ‘50s and ‘60s occurred in the Costa del Sol. 

El Coto is close to the leading tourist centre of Fuengirola and the historic village of Mijas.

El Coto is located in the perfect area close to the Avenida de Mijas that runs down into Fuengirola and up into Mijas Pueblo. Being so close to these two popular holiday destinations means that El Coto has a wide range of things for you to do during your stay.

  2. Paseo Maritimo Promenade - the charming main promenade of Fuengirola that boats a range of restaurants, souvenir shops and fun rides. Take an afternoon stroll along this beautiful and rustic boardwalk and take in the sights and smells of this popular attraction. 

  3. Mijas Aqua Park - one of the most popular attractions of the Costa del Sol. This fantastic water park offers a wide variety of rides to enjoy as well as swimming, restaurants and shows. Mijas Aqua Park is a great place for a family day out. 

  4. Muralla Gardens – one of the gems of Mijas Pueblo. These beautiful gardens can be found in the ruins of an old fortress which once stood watch over Mijas. Due to its previously strategic position, there are some amazing views of the mountains, Mijas and the Mediterranean coast available from here. 

  5. Bioparc Fuengirola - this terrific zoo gives you the ability to get up close and personal with a wide range of exotic animals in specially designed natural habitats. This zoo specialises in breeding programmes for endangered animals and is also very educational. 

The Top 5 Beaches in El Coto

El Coto is conveniently located only a short drive away from Fuengirola, which boasts an amazing 5 miles of beautiful sandy beaches that stretch from Torreblanca to the Sohail Castle. 

Fuengirola’s beaches have a range of excellent facilities and offer water sports such as jet skis, snorkelling and scuba diving.  

Fuengirola boasts some of the best beaches of the Costa del Sol and is a perfect place to visit if you fancy a beach holiday. In no particular order, here are the top 5 beaches to visit in Fuengirola:

  • Playa del Castillo - this beach got its name from its proximity to Sohail Castle. This beach is popular with both tourists and locals and boasts some of the nicest beach bars of Fuengirola. 

  • Los Boliches - is one of the most popular beaches in Fuengirola and is found in the centre of the town, right on the main promenade. Los Boliches boasts terrific amenities including restaurants and beach bars, not to mention plenty of sports and leisure activities. 

  • Playa de Torreblanca - the furthest beach from Fuengirola on the border of Benalmadena. This beach has been awarded with both a blue flag and a Q award for its high quality and excellent facilities. Playa de Torreblanca boasts a relaxed atmosphere and is quieter than the more central beaches.

  • La Playa de Santa Amalia - this beach is directly connected to Playa del Castillo and is very easy to reach from the centre of Fuengirola. This lovely beach was awarded a blue flag in 2018 and has experienced a natural extension due to its popularity. It is one of the longest beaches in Fuengirola and is a go-to sunbathing spot for both tourists and locals.

  • Carvajal beach - this beach is very popular with families and is often busy. Carvajal boasts a variety of beach bars and restaurants and also offers a range of fun beach activities to enjoy. The high standards of its facilities and cleanliness have led to Carvajal receiving a blue flag award.

El Coto Weather

El Coto is lucky enough to enjoy the same great weather that the rest of the Costa del Sol receives. You can expect to experience warm summers with temperatures that sure into the high 30s. Thankfully, there is a delightful sea breeze that blows in from the Mediterranean, which can be a great relief.

In the winter months, the temperature isn’t as hot and there are more frequent overcast days, however, El Coto and the rest of the Costa del Sol is certainly a holiday destination to suit any season. 

El Coto Travel Information

El Coto is around a 20-minute drive away from Malaga airport, which is the main entry point into the Costa del Sol. We recommend an airport transfer as the ideal way to reach your holiday villa, as it is both cost-effective and easy to arrange.

Alternatively, there is a reliable and comfortable train that runs from Malaga to Fuengirola, where it is only a short drive to El Coto by taxi, which are readily available all across the Costa del Sol. 

There is also a useful taxi board available that will provide you with all of the taxi rates before you start your journey.
