Introduction to Fanes, Rhodes

Fanes is a small village located on the North West of the island.  It has a picturesque harbour and a small number of shops.

The focal point of the village is the long, sweeping beach which is very popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.  There are a few decent tavernas at the back of the beach and just a short stroll will take you to the 5* Blue Village Complex which has an array of shops and restaurants.

Fanes is located just west of Soroni, a picturesque village with a small number of bars and tavernas.  It is also only a short drive away from Kamiros, one of Rhodes ancient cities along with Lindos and Lalyssos, much of the ancient city is now ruins but you can still see the remains of this historical city, a must for any archaeologists and history lovers!

History of Fanes

The island of Rhodes has had a rich history as a centre of trade and naval power in the Aegean. Rhodes has had a reputation for producing the finest sailors in the Mediterranean world and has many harbours and ports across the island. 

The name of the village is believed to have come from the lighthouse that was in the village or the temple of Faneos. However, some argue that the name came from a type of grass that grew in the area. 

Things to do in Fanes

Fanes might be a small village but it offers an abundance of activities and attractions for you to explore during your stay, including:

  • Visit Tholos - The town of Tholos is only a short distance from Fanes and boasts a wide range of tavernas, bars and restaurants. Tholos is a typical Greek town where you can expect a warm welcome from the local people. The old town offers a range of historic buildings to explore such as the church of Agios Spiradonas. 

  • Try windsurfing or kitesurfing - Fanes is very popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to its flat beach and northern exposure. Try your hand at the watersport during your stay. There are several equipment rentals in Fanes. 

  • The Temple of Apollo - The historic Temple of Apollo and the Acropolis of Rhodes is only a 10 minutes’ drive away from Fanes and is a perfect day trip for those interested in history. 

  • Boat trips - Rhodes has a strong maritime tradition and offers plenty of boat trips across the Aegean to the other Dodecanese islands and to Turkey. 

  • Visit Rhodes Town - Rhodes Town has a lot to offer visitors, including history, great food and plenty of shopping. Rhodes Town is only 25 minutes away by car, making it a perfect day trip as you explore its beautiful cobbled streets. 

Fanes Beach

Fanes boasts a long, sweeping beach which is extremely popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to the wide, flat sands and northerly exposure. The beach is dotted with tamarisk trees that provide plenty of natural shade from the sun. 

There are several tavernas at the back of the beach that serves food and drink to beachgoers.

Rhodes is one of the hottest Greek islands and has one of the best sunshine records of any of the Mediterranean islands. Fanes enjoys the island's beautiful weather with average summer temperatures of 31°C. 

Fanes Travel Information

Once you have arrived at Rhodes Airport the village of Fanes is only 30 minutes away by car. You will find plenty of hire cars, taxis and buses available to help you explore the island. We recommend a hotel transfer as the easiest and cost-effective way to reach your holiday villa. 

Rhodes is also one of the main ferry hubs of the area and boasts many ferry connections across the Dodecanese and further afield, including Athens, Crete and Turkey.
