Fuengirola’s main attraction is its wonderful 5 miles of golden sandy beaches, stretching from the Sohail Castle in the west all the way to Torreblanca in the east. Wherever you decide to stay in the Costa del Sol, you are guaranteed great beaches, hours of sunshine and plenty of choice for food, drink and shopping.

A walk down the narrow, winding pedestrian streets of Fuengirola that lead off the main square is a discovery waiting to happen for Fuengirola’s many visitors.  Those who do are likely to come across a range of hidden gems, secrets and delightful corners of this affable, Andalucian town.

History of Fuengirola

Fuengirola has its origins in a variety of cultures, including Phoenicians, Romans and the Moors. The area has been settled, occupied and abandoned several times during the turbulent early history of Spain.

In the 10th century, the Moors built Sohail Castle on the site of the older settlements to help defend the area. Sohail Castle was destroyed by invading Christian forces during the Reconquista and remained abandoned until the 18th century when the village of Fuengirola was built.

Once a small fishing village, Fuengirola became a leading tourist centre in the 1960s and continued to grow and develop into the vibrant coastal town that it is now. Thanks to the increased tourism, the old historical sites of Fuengirola, such as Sohail Castle and the old port, have been renovated to allow visitors to explore Fuengirola's history.

Things to do in Fuengirola

Fuengirola's main attraction may be its beaches but you will soon discover an abundance of traditional tapas bars, coastal cafes and restaurants to enjoy during your vacation. You can also go souvenir shopping in the local chic boutiques and other interesting shops that run along the promenade.
