A Brief History of Greece
Greece is considered to be the home of the first advanced civilization in Europe and the birthplace of Western civilisation. From 3200 BC to 1100 BC Greece was home to the Cycladic civilisation, the Minoan civilization on Crete and then the Mycenaean civilization. These civilizations possessed writing and were celebrated shipbuilders and sailors until an event known as the Bronze Age collapse occurred, leading to the Greek Dark Ages where written records are absent.
The Dark Ages ended in 776 BC with the first Olympic Games and the writing of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Greece was now ruled by a number of small city-states, such as Athens or Sparta, which visited and colonised the coasts of the Black Sea, Italy, Asia Minor and even southern France and Eastern Spain.
Greece was unified by Phillip II of Macedonia before Alexander the Great went on to create one of the largest empires in history that stretched from Greece to India. This was the birth of the Hellenistic age.
After the death of Alexander, Greece was annexed by Rome and became part of the Roman Empire. After the division of the empire, Greece became part of the Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire, which adopted the Greek language.
The Byzantine Empire went into a decline which led to the Ottoman Empire from modern-day Turkey conquering Greece and most of Byzantine territory. Ottoman rule continued until 1832 when Greece finally gained its independence.
Greece then had a turbulent period as it came into its own as a nation with shifting governments, Balkan wars and migration. During WW2 Greece was invaded and occupied by Axis forces. After the war, the country almost immediately descended into civil war between communist forces and the Greek government. This conflict ended in 1949 but had lasting economic and socio-political consequences for the country.
Modern Greece has recovered from its turbulent history and is now one of the leading economies in the Balkans, despite its economic problems after the recession of the late 2000s. Greece has a large tourism industry and is a popular tourist destination with a lot to offer visitors.
Weather in Greece
Greece provides guaranteed sun in the popular summer season with temperatures reaching 30 degrees in July and August. Visiting during this period will give you the highest temperatures and up to 12 hours of sunshine a day.
If you are put off by the staggering temperatures then visiting in autumn or spring might be better. Temperatures are cooler in the mid-twenties and can be much more comfortable if you are interested in visiting the tourist attractions and historical sites that Greece has to offer.
Greek Travel Information
Tourism is a key element in the Greek economy and Greece welcomes over 28 million visitors each year. In fact, Greece is one of the most visited countries in Europe.
