When tourism began to boom in the 1960s and holiday villas and apartments were built to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the area. Until the 1970s the village was known as ‘La Cala del Moral’ which means the Bay of Mulberries, because of the number of mulberry trees growing in the area. However, there is another resort near to Malaga called Cala del Moral so it was renamed La Cala de Mijas to avoid confusion. There are four historical towers in La Cala de Mijas that were built as defence against the Berbers. These towers can still be viewed and some date back as far as the 16th Century.
