History of La Cala de Mijas

Like many villages on the Costa del Sol, La Cala de Mijas started out as a pretty whitewashed Andalusian pueblo. When tourism from Europe began to boom in the 1960s many holiday villas and apartments were built to accommodate the growing number of visitors and tourists to the area.

Historically, the village of La Cala de Mijas was a place of defence and was secured with four towers along the Mediterranean coast of Andalucia. The purpose of these towers was to provide the local garrisons if enemy ships were spotted. The area was often raided by Barbary Corsairs. 

Once known as La Cala del Moral, due to the many mulberry trees that grow in the area, the name was changed to La Cala de Mijas to avoid confusion with the alike named Cala del Mora, close to Malaga.

The sea floor of La Cala de Mijas' coast and beaches is of ecological importance as it houses a rich biodiversity with the coexistence of a large number of European, African and Mediterranean species.

There is a charming promenade full of beach bars and restaurants for when you fancy a bite to eat. It caters to sunbathers, scuba divers and snorkelers. It is a beach rich in biodiversity and is famous for its clean and clear waters and its laidback atmosphere.

  2. El Cabo Rocoso - Identified by the ancient watchtower that guards it, this beach is perfect for charming morning walks all year round. El Cabo Rocoso is quieter than some of the other beaches due to the Rocks at the water’s edge but is popular with surfers, snorkelers and swimmers. There is a range of water sports equipment available to hire as well as sunbeds and other facilities. This beach is located close to the Cala Moral tower in La Cala de Mijas.

  3. El Bombo - this beach curves into a large bay that ends in a small rocky cliff which makes it popular with scuba divers and snorkelers. There is a range of facilities available for sunbathers, as well as many beach bars offering food and drinks. Enjoy a morning walk along the dark sand and listening to the waves. 

  4. Butiplaya - close to La Cala Beach, this semi-urban beach is swarming with locals and tourists all year around. It was awarded a Blue Flag for its cleanliness and excellent facilities. You will also find watersports gear for hire so you can enjoy the jet skis, water-skiing and many other marine activities.

  5. La Butibamba - this beach is another popular sunbathing spot, boasting 1,300 meters of medium grain black sands. The waves are moderate, making it the perfect spot to sit back and bathe in the Costa del Sol sunshine. It's lively during the weekend and in the summer months thanks to its many music events on offer.

La Cala de Mijas Weather

La Cala de Mijas enjoys a typical sub-tropical Mediterranean climate and is well known for its pleasant weather. As the name, Costa del Sol would suggest, there is an abundance of sun in La Cala de Mijas which is combined with hot summers and warm winters to make it a perfect holiday destination. 

The summer months can see temperatures averaging 32 ºC with a lovely cooling sea breeze keeping the temperature enjoyable. The winter months don’t have quite the same heat but are still pleasant, making La Cala de Mijas an all year round holiday destination. 

The Costa del Sol climate attracts tourists from all over Europe and La Cala de Mijas is an excellent spot to enjoy that excellent weather from.

La Cala de Mijas Travel Information

The closest airport to La Cala de Mijas is Malaga Airport and is only a short 20-minute drive away. The route is well signposted, much like the rest of the Costa del Sol, making it easy to find your way around. 

There is an abundance of hire cars and taxis available in the Costa del Sol, but we recommend an airport transfer for the most cost-effective and easy way to arrive at your villa.

There is a range of local buses that stop regularly in the centre of the village that connects La Cala de Mijas to Marbella and Fuengirola, as well as other locations. 

When you arrive in the village, one of the most popular ways to get around is by a Burro taxi (Donkey ride). Known as a local Mijas tradition, it was tested in La Cala de Mijas by the local government who has given it their approval. This has since made it a widely popular attraction in La Cala de Mijas.
