History of La Cala de Mijas

Like many villages on the Costa del Sol, La Cala de Mijas started out as a pretty whitewashed Andalusian pueblo. When tourism began to boom in the 1960s and holiday villas and apartments were built to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the area.

Historically it was a place of defence, secured with four towers along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia, whose purpose was to give notice of the habitation of enemy ships.

Once known as La Cala del Moral, due to the many mulberry trees that grow in the area, the name was changed to La Cala de Mijas to avoid confusion with the alike named Cala del Mora, close to Malaga.

  1. La Cala Beach - the main beach that is hugely popular beach perfect for the entire family catering for sunbathers, scuba divers and snorkelers. It is a beach rich in biodiversity and is famous for its clean and clear waters and its laidback atmosphere.

  2. El Cabo Rocoso - situated by the Marina Estate beach, Caba Rosoco, also known as Rocky Cape, offers an array of towering cliffs that build up a stunning landscape around this sandy beach. Located close to the Cala Moral tower in La Cala de Mijas.

  3. El Bombo - pleasant beach for morning walks any time of year and a popular spot for local fisherman. This rocky beach with dark sand and clean water makes it ideal for a spot of snorkelling, and is also popular thanks to its many beach bars on offer.

  4. Butiplaya - close to La Cala Beach, this semi-urban beach is swarming with locals and tourists all year around. It was awarded with a Blue Flag for it's cleanliness and excellent facilities. You will also find watersports gear for hire so you can enjoy the jet skis, water-skiing and many other marine activities.

  5. La Butibamba - this beach is another popular sunbathing spot boasting 1,300 meters of medium grain black sands. The waves are moderate making it the perfect spot to sit back and bathe in the Costa del Sol sunshine. It's lively during weekend and in the summer months thanks to its many music events on offer.

La Cala de Mijas Weather

The Costa del Sol is well known for its pleasant temperatures, and La Cala is no different. The Mediterranean climate is lovely during the summer months from May until the end of September. In the off periods, it isn’t quite the same heat, but it’s a town you can expect to enjoy pleasant weather all year round.

La Cala de Mijas Travel Information

La Cala de Mijas is situated just a short 20 minute drive from Malaga International Airport by car, with the route well sign posted, making finding the village rather easy. Hire cars and taxis are in abundance throughout the Costa del Sol, but we recommend an airport transfer for the most cost effective way to arrive at your villa.

When you arrive in the village, the most popular way to get around is by a Burro taxi (Donkey ride). Known as a Mijas tradition, it was tested in La Cala and the local governments approval has since made it a possibility and widely popular attraction in La Cala de Mijas.
