Information on Portugal

An Introduction to Portugal

Portugal is a tranquil country and a place known for its diverse offering of activities for all to enjoy. From the rocky mountain peaks, obscure gorges and charming vineyards of the north, to the pristine sandy beaches, scenic hills and wide horizons in the south, tourists have fascinating amounts of history and culture to discover in Portugal.

Portugal is Europe’s most western part and its consistently hot temperatures also make it one of Europe’s warmest country. Experience everything from a late-night party in one of Lisbon’s renowned clubs, a mountain hike inhabited by wolves and lynx, or a relaxing day on a deserted cove, the best way to relax in true Portuguese style.

The country has effortlessly combined culture, heritage and liberal attitudes to invent one of Europe’s finest holiday destinations. The country’s relatively small size offers a place rich with history and culture, and therefore is appealing to a wide variety of visitors.

Portugal has been blessed with a beautiful climate and spectacular natural scenery, including the beautiful sandy coastlines that tourists and holiday goers flock to. As a people, the Portuguese are extremely welcoming and friendly, and the whole country has a relaxed and laid-back approach to life.

The economy of Portugal is very much reliant on tourism, and the government has actively inspired investment to ensure the facilities are excellent, hotels are quality and tourism services provided are of the highest standards.

Best places to visit in Portugal

Portugal's tourism has been hugely successful over the past few decades and continues to be one of the best value European destinations. Portugal has it all; a rich history, innovative artwork, award-winning golf courses, gorgeous views and incredibly welcoming locals.

We provide luxury holiday villas in some of Portugal’s most popular holiday destinations, including:

1. Algarve

The Algarve is one of the most popular destinations to visit in Portugal and is renowned for its amazing climate, unlimited leisure facilities and fantastic villa rentals. Gorgeous sandy beaches can be found across the coast of Algarve that range from secluded coves to family-friendly beaches with all the facilities.

Algarve has a reputation for kind-hearted hospitality and many towns and villages in the Algarve speak English fluently, which is helpful if your Portuguese could do with some work. Making Algarve as warm and welcoming as the year-round sun.

2. Costa Azul

Costa Azul is located to the south of Lisbon and is the perfect holiday destination if you want to both explore the capital and relax in a charming and relaxed area of Portugal.

Costa Azul is full of delicious aromas and gentle melodies (known as fado) as you meander from cosy bars and restaurants that stretch along slender, cobbled streets after a long day of exploring all that Portugal has to offer.

3. Óbidos

Romantic, charming and picturesque, Óbidos is the perfect place for those who like to take photographs. Expect an array of white houses decorated in bright flowers and traditional shops offering various souvenirs for tourists. Make sure you get a taste of the Ginja de Óbidos, a local cherry liqueur often served in miniature chocolate cups.

Once offered as a wedding gift from Portuguese kings to their wives, this city has since developed a reputation for one of the most romantic retreats in Portugal. Óbidos is also known as the city for book lovers, largely thanks to the wonderful Literary Man Hotel.

Beaches in Portugal

The Algarve boasts some of the best beaches in Portugal with a glorious combination of golden sands, hot weather and amazing facilities attracting visitors year after year to this stunning stretch of Portuguese coastline. The Algarve boasts more than 100 miles of golden sands for sun-worshippers to enjoy. The beaches are lapped by the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean which are perfect for a nice cooling dip after lying in the sun for a while.

The white sands of the Silver Coast meet the cool sapphire waters of the Atlantic to form a perfect beach destination. Backed by charming Portuguese villages, this rugged and beautiful coastline boasts several surfing beaches, attracting water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. Many are perfect for swimming with sheltered areas that are patrolled by lifeguards.

A Brief History of Portugal

Portugal has a rich history and has had a profound impact on the world, despite the country’s small size. The area has been settled by many different cultures over the years and has traded hands from the Lusitanian tribes, the Carthaginians and then the Romans.

After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire Portugal and the rest of the Iberian peninsula was invaded by the Visigoths, who created a kingdom. This kingdom lasted for 300 years until the Islamic conquest of Iberia in 700 AD.

Islamic rule in Portugal lasted until Christian forces rose up and slowly pushed the Moors back across Spain and Portugal. This period was known as the Reconquista and by 1249 the Kingdom of Portugal had gained its present-day borders.

In 1373 Portugal made an alliance with England, which to this day is the longest-standing alliance in the world. This alliance allowed the two countries to protect their interests against the French, Spanish and Dutch across the world during the colonial period and is what gives Portugal its visible English influence.

Portugal was a leader during the age of discovery and Portugal’s famous navigators opened up several sea routes to the world, bringing back riches from Africa, Brazil and India. Portugal spearheaded exploration and colonisation across the world, establishing Portugal as a world power in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Modern Portugal is a member of the European Union and an important country in Western Europe. It is a popular tourist destination for people all over the world who are looking for beautiful beaches and charming weather.

Portugal Weather

The weather in Portugal is set by blue skies, pleasant oceans, and an abundance of sun, even in the winter months. This European holiday destination offers long days filled with beaming sunshine, a small chance of rain, and a cool breeze along the coast, where you’ll find it’s lovely and mild even during winter.

The weather in Portugal is still desirable in the winter, with the average daily temperature reaching 15°C. January is the wettest month, but rainfall is only ever light.

The temperature begins to rise in April as summer is close, with an average high of 20°C in the capital of Lisbon. Be sure to expect a minimum of ten hours of daily sunshine during a typical spring day in Portugal.

Portugal Travel Information

Thousands of tourists arrive at Portugal’s airports every week ready for a memorable holiday in a unique European destination. The Portela Airport in Lisbon is the main entryway into Portugal with important secondary airports at Porto and Faro also welcoming many tourists each day.

Once you have arrived in Portugal, there are many forms of transport options to choose from to help you get from place to place. Portugal's road network connects the largest towns and tourist attractions to make getting around via hire car easy and convenient.

Portugal also has a reliable local bus network that is a cost-effective and simple way to get around. Bus stops are located over the major towns and cities of Portugal and many visitors like to experience this form of transport thanks to the scenic views along the way.

In addition to the rail network, above ground, there is an underground network operating in Lisbon and Porto that runs into the early hours. The capital’s network spreads across the city and is a convenient way to explore Lisbon. Many stations are decorated with colourful painted tiles that transform into works of art.

Finding a taxi is super easy in Portugal. They are placed all over the country and are normally cream in colour, whilst traditional taxis are black with a green roof making them easy to spot. Like most taxi services, fares are displayed on a meter which increases as the journey continues. Taxi drivers are always willing to offer approximate prices for a specific journey beforehand to help give you an idea of how much it will cost.
