Information on Puerto del Carmen

Introduction to Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote’s most popular resort and is located on the south-east coast of the island, not far from the capital of Arrecife. It is conveniently located close to a wide range of attractions and sights of the island and is a great destination for a villa holiday.

Puerto del Carmen has 6 kilometres of beautiful golden sanded beaches for you to explore. Many of which provide watersports facilities as well as boasting Blue Flag awards for their cleanliness and excellent facilities.

The historic old town and harbour is the perfect place to explore the history of this old fishing village, as well as sampling some of the local cuisines, that effortlessly blends traditional Spanish dishes with African and Latin American influences.

Lanzarote enjoys a beautiful climate with near-constant sunshine and is the perfect holiday destination for those looking to relax in the sun.

History of Puerto del Carmen

Like many places in Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen was originally a small fishing village on the south-east coast of the island. The town’s old harbour still exists and is a charming place to visit, especially if you are interested in amazing seafood restaurants.

Puerto del Carmen is the oldest resort on the island and has grown significantly over the last twenty years, however, the development has stayed away from the high-rise buildings of many other developments thanks to strict planning restrictions and the work of local artist, Cesar Manrique.

Things to do in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is the most popular resort on Lanzarote and as such boasts a wide range of attractions and activities for you to enjoy.

If the sun and sea is your thing, you will love the 6 kilometre stretch of beautiful sandy beaches available in Puerto del Carmen. Take your pick from a range of excellent beaches, many of which have been awarded Blue Flags.

Puerto del Carmen is also the perfect place to take part in a range of water sports such as diving and windsurfing. Equipment rental and learning centres are available on many of the beaches.

If you prefer your sport on land, take a trip to Lanzarote’s newest golf resort and play on its beautiful 18 hole course that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

To help you make a start planning your holiday itinerary we have included 5 of our favourite things to see and do in Puerto del Carmen:

  • Puerto del Carmen Nightlife - Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote’s busiest resort for nightlife, however, it doesn’t provide a wild club-style experience outside of the summer season. Puerto del Carmen’s nightlife is centred around the old town harbour and the disco-bars in Centro-Atlantico on the main strip. There are also several Irish Bars scattered around the resort.

  • Watersports - Puerto del Carmen provides ample opportunities to take part in a range of exhilarating watersports such as windsurfing and scuba diving. There are several diving schools and windsurfing centres in Puerto del Carmen if you are interested in learning and having a go.

  • Lanzarote Golf Resort - the recently opened golf resort boasts an 18 hole, 72 par course that was designed by well-known American golf course designer, Ron Kirby. The golf course overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and has been designed to have a limited impact on the local countryside by using recycled water. The resort is welcoming to players of all skill sets and provides all of the usual facilities.

  • Old Town & Harbour - the historic centre of Puerto del Carmen and home to a wide range of restaurants, bars, ice cream parlous and shops. Puerto del Carmen’s old town boasts the best restaurants in the town and is the perfect place to visit for some locally sourced seafood.

  • Fiesta de Nuestra Senora del Carmen - this festival is celebrated at the end of July and commemorated the patron saint of Puerto del Carmen. Visitors flock to the town from all over to enjoy folklore performances, singing and dancing and amazing traditional food. Specially decorated fishing boats head out to sea to pray for good catches in the coming year.

The Top 5 Beaches in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen boasts a range of beaches with soft golden sand and calm waters for swimming. Many of the beaches here have been awarded Blue Flags for their high quality and excellent facilities.

With so many excellent beaches making up Puerto del Carmen’s 6 kilometres of coastline, it’s hard to choose the best beach to recommend, so instead, we have selected our 5 favourites that are all well worth a visit:

  1. Playa Grande – one of the most popular beaches in Puerto del Carmen and as the name would suggest, the largest. Playa Grande was awarded a Blue Flag for its high quality and excellent facilities, including lifeguards, toilets, hammocks and a children's playground. The water here is very calm and is perfect for swimming with children.

  2. Playa Chica - this small and cosy beach is close to the old town of Puerto del Carmen and is perfect for swimming and scuba diving. Divers flock to Playa Chica to enjoy the breathtaking underwater scenery including sunken wrecks, Shrimp Cave and manta rays. There is a diving school here if you fancy taking the plunge.

  3. Playa Pocillos - the perfect beach for those who are interested in water sports such as windsurfing. The water here is very safe for swimming and the facilities are excellent. There is an amphibious wheelchair available for those with reduced mobility to enjoy the ocean too.

  4. El Barranquillo - this hidden gem of a beach is perfect for those looking for some tranquillity and amazing sunsets. It isn’t signposted so it can take some searching to find, but after ambling through some alleyways off the Avenida de las Playas you will find this beautiful sandy paradise. It’s discreet with an atmosphere of romance and is perfect for couples looking for a peaceful spot to relax and watch the sunset.

  5. Playa Matagorda – this beach is incredibly popular with surfers and windsurfers due to the constant breeze. Playa Matagorda is a very pretty beach that boasts a charming promenade with a great selection of restaurants and shops for you to enjoy.

Puerto del Carmen Weather

The Canary Islands enjoy good weather almost all year round. They are nicknamed the Islands of Eternal Spring and as such the temperature rarely drops below 16ºC and often rise to 30ºC in the summer months.

The temperature of the islands is influenced by their close proximity to North Africa which provides constant sunshine and enjoyable temperatures.

Lanzarote and Puerto del Carmen is a year-round holiday destination and the perfect place to work on your tan.

Puerto del Carmen Travel Information

Puerto del Carmen is only a ten-minute drive away from Arrecife Airport and is easy to get to. There are hire cars, taxis and local buses available to help you reach your holiday villa, however, we recommend making use of an airport transfer as the easiest and most cost-effective way.

Once you have arrived in Puerto del Carmen taxis are a relatively cheap way to get around town, but can become more expensive once you leave Puerto del Carmen to travel to other areas.

You are much better off making use of the local buses, which are reliable, cheap and comfortable. Buses to Costa Teguise, Arrecife and Tias can all be caught from outside the Biosfera shopping centre.
