Introduction to Riviera del Sol

Riviera del Sol is an urbanisation near La Cala de Mijas that is incredibly popular with tourists and foreign ex-pats, many who live there permanently. Riviera del Sol is located on the coast between Fuengirola and Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

Due to Riviera del Sol’s proximity to the beaches and attractions of some of the Costa del Sol’s most popular resorts and tourist destinations it is a great place to stay if you want to explore everything the Costa del Sol has to offer. 

History of Riviera del Sol

Like many of the urbanisations on the Costa del Sol, Riviera del Sol was developed due to the tourism boom that began in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Many new apartments and villas were built to accommodate the tourists as well as shops, restaurants and other amenities. 

Historically, the area had been settled by several different cultures over the years before it was secured by Christian forces during the Reconquista. The area around Riviera del Sol was defended by several watchtowers that were built to guard against piracy as it was often raided by Barbary Corsairs.

  2. Playa Artola - this beach is to the west of the Cabopino marina and is unique as it is the only beach in Marbella that isn’t backed by any urbanisation. This is thanks to the sand dunes that are protected. The historic Torre Ladrones watch tower watches over this beach. 

  3. The Playa Calahonda - the longest beach on the Mijas Costa and is very popular with tourists and locals alike. It boasts a variety of excellent beach bars and restaurants and caters for sunbathers and is very family-friendly. 

  4. Funny Beach Marbella - famous for its go-karting track that shares the same name. This beach boasts a large watersports centre which rents out a range of equipment such as jet skis and hoverboards.

It is a 25 minutes drive to Riviera del Sol from Malaga Airport, which is the main entry point to the Costa del Sol for many tourists. The main route through the Costa del Sol is well signposted making it incredibly easy to find your way around. 

Hire cars and taxis are in abundance throughout the Costa del Sol, making it incredibly easy to travel around the different towns and resorts if you desired. We recommend that you make use of an airport transfer to reach your holiday rental as it is easier and more cost-effective than other options. 

There is also a range of reliable and comfortable local buses that connects Riviera del Sol and La Cala de Mijas with the rest of the Costa del Sol, including Marbella, Fuengirola and Mijas Pueblo.
