Information on Torremolinos

Introduction to Torremolinos

Torremolinos is a municipality in the region of Andalucia. What was once a poor fishing village, this town is now a bustling resort and one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain.

Torremolinos is almost two completely different towns depending on which season you visit. The height of summer sees Torremolinos become increasingly popular with tourists, especially younger ones who enjoy the hectic nightlife. Off-season Torremolinos takes on a different character that is much more traditional and Spanish.

Explore the bustling centre and walk along the Calle San Miguel visiting shops and boutiques, take a trip to the seafront promenade and the many fabulous beaches on offer or take it slow with a visit to La Carihuela to walk amongst the traditional houses and bougainvillaea clad patios.

History of Torremolinos

Much like nearby Malaga, Torremolinos has been settled by many different cultures, including the Phoenicians, Romans, The Moors before being re-conquered by the Christians in the 1500s.

The Moors constructed a 12-metre defensive tower which still stands today at the end of Calle San Miguel.

Torremolinos grew rapidly during the Spanish tourism boom of the ‘60s and ‘70s and was incredibly popular with British tourists. The town’s reputation suffered due to the behaviour of British visitors and football hooligans.

The ‘60s also saw Torremolinos develop into the wilder, more liberal part of the austere Catholic Spain. The opening of several clubs, the common use of hallucinogenic substances and the opening of the first gay bar in Spain in 1962 all helped to create a liberal and welcoming reputation for Torremolinos.

After the turn of the millennium, Torremolinos worked hard to reinvent its image to attract a more up-market tourist. Torremolinos now presents itself as an authentic Spanish destination with traditional village life of La Carihuela at its core.
