Hand Luggage on Airlines

Airlines are constantly changing their minds about what you can carry as hand luggage. Airport security is tighter than ever and airlines are always keen to slam extra charges on passengers if you don’t follow their guidelines on how much luggage you can carry with you. Here is a quick guide to hand luggage allowances on some of the most popular budget airlines. Below you’ll also find a simple guide to what you can now carry on planes in terms of liquids…

Rules for liquids in hand luggage:

-Liquids can only be carried in containers with a maximum volume of 100ml. Lip balm, lipsticks, hand creams, deodorant and hair spray are all considered as liquids in this context.

– All containers must fit into a transparent, sealable 1 litre plastic bag, measuring no more than 20 x 20cm

– The plastic bag must be carried separately through security, not kept in your hand luggage.

– Baby food and milk formula is the only exception to this rule. You can carry as much food as is deemed necessary for your length of flight and this does not have to be carried in the zip up bag. You will still have to declare this when going through security.

Hand Luggage Guidelines

Monarch Airlines

Monarch offer 2 different options when it comes to hand luggage; you can take one piece of luggage no bigger than 56 x 40 x 25cm and no heavier than 10kg, plus a small duty free bag from the departure lounge. If you have checked in online and turn up at the gate with more than one piece of hand luggage you will be charged £40 per item. Children over 2 qualify for free hand luggage.
